Drill Bit Size Chart: Fractional, Number, Letter and Metric

Decimal inch and millimeter equivalents for every standard drill size, plus the tap drills for common threads.

Drill Hole Size Calculator for Tapped Threads

How to Read a Drill Bit Size Chart

US drills come in four series. Fractional drills step in 1/64 inch. Number drills run from #80 (0.0135 in, the smallest) to #1 (0.2280 in); the higher the number, the smaller the drill. Letter drills run from A (0.2340 in) to Z (0.4130 in) and fill the gaps above #1. Metric drills are sized in millimeters. Find the size you have in any table and read across to the decimal inch and millimeter equivalent. Values use 1 in = 25.4 mm exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a #7 drill?

0.2010 in (5.105 mm). It is the tap drill for 1/4-20 UNC.

What is a 1/4 inch drill in millimeters?

6.35 mm. The letter E drill is the same size, 0.2500 in.

What drill size is 5/16 in millimeters?

7.938 mm. It is the tap drill for 3/8-16 UNC.

Why do number drills get smaller as the number goes up?

The series comes from the old wire gauge system, where a higher gauge number meant a thinner wire. #1 is 0.2280 in and #80 is 0.0135 in.

What drill do I use for an M8 tap?

A 6.8 mm drill for M8 x 1.25, which gives about 75% thread.
