BUMAX Enables Precision and Purity for ETpathfinder’s Vacuum and Cryogenic Environments
Background
ETpathfinder, a pioneering research facility in the Netherlands, is developing next-generation technologies for the Einstein Telescope (ET) — a gravitational wave observatory designed to explore black hole formation, neutron star collisions, and the early universe. These advanced experiments demand equipment that can operate in extreme, contamination-sensitive environments, including ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic temperatures as low as -445°F (-265°C).
To ensure mission success, ETpathfinder needed fasteners that would deliver exceptional mechanical precision, zero contamination risk, and reliable performance under extreme conditions. That’s why they turned to BUMAX.

Our Features
The Challenge:
The components of ETpathfinder are housed in a cleanroom-grade vacuum vessel, isolated from external environmental interference. In this sensitive setting, standard fasteners presented multiple critical issues:
-
Lubricants could not be used — they release gases (outgassing) that contaminate vacuum environments
-
Without lubrication, stainless steel screws are prone to galling, leading to seizing, failure, or damage during assembly
-
Materials also needed to maintain mechanical integrity at cryogenic temperatures, which most fasteners are not rated for
-
Any fastener-related contamination or failure could result in costly downtime, precision loss, or failed experiments
The Solution Approach:
To meet these demanding requirements, ETpathfinder selected BUMAX 88 EPK — a specially engineered variant of BUMAX 88, designed for extreme environments and vacuum compatibility.
Why BUMAX 88 EPK Was the Right Solution:
-
Anti-Galling Surface Treatment: BUMAX 88 EPK screws are hardened and treated to significantly reduce the risk of galling — even without lubrication.
-
Vacuum-Compatible Cleaning & Packaging: Each fastener is meticulously cleaned and packaged to meet cleanroom and vacuum environment standards, ensuring zero contamination.
-
Cryogenic Performance: BUMAX 88 EPK retains high strength and toughness at cryogenic temperatures as low as -445°F (-265°C) — far beyond the capabilities of standard fasteners.
-
Stable Torque and Preload: These fasteners deliver consistent and reliable clamping force, ensuring precise, stable assemblies critical to ETpathfinder’s high-performance systems.
The Results:
By switching to BUMAX 88 EPK, ETpathfinder achieved a secure, clean, and long-lasting fastening solution perfectly suited for their cutting-edge research environment:
✔ Zero contamination risk — no lubricants, no outgassing, no compromise
✔ No galling issues during assembly — saving time, effort, and potential rework
✔ Reliable performance at cryogenic temperatures — ensuring stability in extreme conditions
✔ Improved torque consistency and clamping reliability for sensitive, high-precision assemblies
✔ Reduced maintenance and downtime, thanks to long-lasting durability and performance
